You See Yourself?

You See Yourself? is an ongoing series of portraits of black women, girls and non-binary people. It moves beyond the idea that 'you need to be able to see us', as posed by re:present, to the recognition that 'we need to be able to see us'.

With these photographs, I am adding to the ever growing archive of photos reflecting the people still too often absent in visual representation. The project is made up of portrait sessions specific to the series, while also encompassing elements of my wider portfolio.

A selection from this series featured as part of Manifesting The Unseen, a one month residency from November to December 2018 featuring the work of a group of female Muslim artists.

This project received part of an ESRC grant in 2019.
